Albrecht Altdorfer
1480–1538, Germany (Regensburg), Danube School, Northern Renaissance
Altdorfer was painter, printmaker and city architect in Regensburg. He was among the first to make landscape itself the subject: dense forests, river banks and mountains along the Danube in which the saints almost disappear. His small woodcuts of the Passion of Christ and his designs for goldsmiths’ goblets show how finely he told stories.
