Ancient Greece
760–200 v. Chr., Greece, mainly Athens and Corinth, Geometric, Archaic and Classical periods
In Athens and Corinth, potters and vase painters decorated vessels for wine, oil and water – first with geometric patterns, then with black figures on red clay and, from around 530 BCE, the other way round, with red figures on a black ground. We know many painters only by their style; scholars give them names of convenience such as “the Cleveland Painter”. Sculptors created the kouroi and korai from which Classical sculpture emerged.
