Eugène Boudin

1824–1898, France (Honfleur, Le Havre, Trouville), Forerunner of Impressionism

Boudin, the son of a sailor from Honfleur, almost always painted outdoors: beaches full of summer visitors at Trouville, harbours, boats and above all the sky. Corot called him the “king of skies”. He encouraged the young Claude Monet to paint outside – Monet later said he owed Boudin everything.
