Mark Catesby

Der englische Naturforscher Mark Catesby reiste zweimal nach Nordamerika und auf die Bahamas, sammelte Pflanzen und Tiere und zeichnete sie vor Ort. Weil ihm das Geld für Kupferstecher fehlte, lernte er selbst radieren: Seine „Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands“ (1731–1743) war das erste große illustrierte Werk über die Natur Nordamerikas – Vögel, Fische, Schlangen und Krebse, jeweils mit einer passenden Pflanze.
