Frederic Edwin Church
1826–1900, USA, Hudson River School
Church was the most famous American landscape painter of the nineteenth century. Inspired by Alexander von Humboldt, he travelled to Colombia and Ecuador and painted volcanoes, rainforests and rivers. His “Niagara” was a sensation in New York in 1857: thousands paid admission to see a single painting.
