Claude Lorrain

1604–1682, Lorraine, Italy (Rome), Baroque (ideal landscape)

Claude Gellée, known as Lorrain, came to Rome from Lorraine as a young man and stayed for the rest of his life. He invented the “ideal landscape”: harbours against the light, shepherds beneath tall trees, ancient ruins in golden evening light. His etchings and paintings were collected throughout Europe and influenced generations of landscape painters down to Turner.
