Thomas Cole
1801–1848, England, USA (Catskill, New York), Hudson River School, Romanticism
Thomas Cole came to the United States from England as a teenager and found his subjects in the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains. He is regarded as the founder of the Hudson River School, the first American landscape painting with a character of its own. In large series such as “The Voyage of Life” he used landscapes to tell of childhood, youth, adulthood and old age.
