Early Engravers
um 1470–1533, Upper Rhine (Colmar), the Netherlands (Leiden), Late Gothic and Northern Renaissance
Martin Schongauer of Colmar was the first painter to turn engraving into a great art: his fine, clearly drawn prints travelled all over Europe, and the young Dürer wanted to study with him. Lucas van Leyden engraved masterly plates while still a teenager and told biblical stories with wit, landscape and people of his own day.
