Room 1
Ancient Egypt
1981 v. Chr. – 150 n. Chr., Egypt, mainly Thebes (today Luxor), Middle and New Kingdom, Third Intermediate Period, Roman period
For three thousand years, Egyptian workshops created statues, reliefs, papyri and tomb furnishings according to strict rules of proportion and pose. Most works in this room come from Thebes: the sphinx and the seated statue of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut from her temple at Deir el-Bahri, the wooden models from the tomb of the chancellor Meketre, the ceiling painting from the palace of Amenhotep III. The names of the sculptors and painters have almost never come down to us.
