El Greco
1541–1614, Crete, Venice, Rome and Toledo (Spain), Mannerism
Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco (“the Greek”), started out as an icon painter on Crete, studied Titian’s colours in Venice and found his very own style in Toledo: elongated figures, flickering light and cool, glowing colours. His “Laocoön”, his only painting on a subject from ancient mythology, shows not Troy in the background but Toledo.
