Paul Klee
1879–1940, Switzerland (Bern), Germany (Munich, Weimar, Dessau), Modernism (Blue Rider, Bauhaus)
Klee was also a violinist and almost became a musician. His pictures are small, full of wit and poetry: signs, lines and fields of colour turn into animals, gardens, tightrope walkers and witches. “Art does not reproduce the visible, but makes visible,” he wrote. At the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau he taught a whole generation.
