Édouard Manet

1832–1883, France (Paris), Realism and Impressionism

Manet painted modern Paris – railway stations, balls, horse races, cafés – with flat areas of colour and a black he had admired in Velázquez and Goya. His paintings caused scandals at the Salon, and he paved the way for the Impressionists, even though he never exhibited with them.
