Amedeo Modigliani

1884–1920, Italy (Livorno), France (Paris), Modernism (School of Paris)

Modigliani came to Paris from Livorno in 1906 and lived among the artists of Montmartre and Montparnasse. Inspired by sculpture and by African masks, he found his unmistakable style: long necks, oval faces, almond-shaped eyes. His portraits show friends, dealers and artists from his circle, such as the painter Chaim Soutine. He died at the age of 35.
