Room 96
Rembrandt van Rijn
1606–1669, Netherlands, Baroque / Dutch Golden Age
Rembrandt was a master of chiaroscuro: figures emerge from deep brown into warm light. More than 80 self-portraits show him from early success to the late, unsparing look at himself – one of them hangs in this room.
