Room 88
Peter Paul Rubens
1577–1640, Flanders (Antwerp), Baroque
Rubens was painter, scholar and diplomat all at once. After eight years in Italy he ran a large workshop in Antwerp that produced altarpieces, portraits and mythological scenes for royal courts across Europe. His paintings are full of movement, light and strong colour – bodies twist, horses rear, fabrics billow.
