John Singer Sargent

1856–1925, USA, Europe, Realism

Sargent was born in Florence to American parents and lived in Paris and London. He was the most sought-after portrait painter of his time, but liked best to paint on his travels: alleys in Venice, light in Cairo, fisherwomen in Brittany, glaciers at the Simplon Pass – with quick, sure brushstrokes.
