J. M. W. Turner
1775–1851, Great Britain (London), Romanticism
Turner painted light, steam and weather more than things. In his Venice paintings, palaces and ships dissolve into shimmering colour; in the late works sky and sea almost merge. One critic scoffed that he painted “soapsuds and whitewash” – today he is seen as a pioneer of modern art.
