Anthonis van Dyck
1599–1641, Flanders (Antwerp), Italy (Genoa), England, Baroque
Van Dyck was Rubens’s most gifted pupil. In Genoa he painted the nobility in splendid full-length portraits; in London he became court painter to Charles I. His elegant, calm portraits with silky fabrics and slender hands shaped portraiture in Europe for more than a century.
