Study for "Astronomy"

Elihu Vedder, 1892

The image shows a woman seated on a draped surface with her right leg bent, left foot on the ground. Her left arm rests on a globe, holding a pair of compasses. She is looking to her right, with a profile view, straight nose, prominent cheekbones, hair pulled back, partially covered by a headband. The woman is nude, draped in fabrics. To her right, there's a scroll with text and a stack of books, the top one labeled "ASTRONOMIA." The background is plain with a curved arch shape.
