Landscape, Distant Village

Millet, Daubigny and Barbizon, c. 1870/1875

The artwork presents a landscape with a view from a slightly elevated point, leading the eye down a winding dirt path. Close to us, the path is flanked by green fields, with patches of earth visible through the grass. A couple of figures walk along the path toward a small cluster of trees. The horizon is placed low in the composition, allowing the sky to dominate the scene. The sky is filled with swirling cloud formations painted in a palette of grays and soft whites. In the distance, a small village with a few buildings, including a red-roofed house, is nestled among sparse trees. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive. The overall color palette is earthy and subdued, with greens, browns, and grays creating an effect.
