The Great Windmill and the Rainbow

Französische Malerei 1881–1890, 1888

The artwork depicts a rural scene with a large windmill positioned slightly to the right. The windmill is tall, with its sails extending across the sky. A faint rainbow arcs across the sky. Close to us, there are several stacks of hay arranged in a field. To the left, a tree with dense foliage stands near a small house with a prominent chimney. The horizon is low, giving the sky a vast presence, painted in tones of gray and blue with hints of sunlight breaking through. The brushstrokes are subtle and smooth.
