Elizabeth Stevens Carle

Amerikanische Malerei 1770–1790, circa 1783/1784

This artwork is a portrait of a woman shown from the waist up, seated and slightly turned to her left. She has a composed expression and her eyes are directed towards the viewer. Her hair is styled in an elaborate fashion, adorned with a decorative arrangement of white feathers and pearls. She wears a light blue dress with lace trim at the neckline and sleeves, and a matching shawl draped around her shoulders. Her right hand is placed on her chest while her left hand rests on her lap. The background is dark, enhancing the focus on her figure, and a richly textured curtain is visible to the right side of the painting. A patterned cushion is also seen behind her.
