Ferruginous Thrush

Audubon: Die Vögel Amerikas II, 1831

This is a painting of a scene featuring three birds protecting a nest from a black snake. Three birds are shown around a nest with eggs, set in green foliage. One bird is in flight above the nest, another is confronting the snake approaching the nest. The snake is depicted in the branches, creating tension in the composition. The style is reminiscent of John James Audubon's detailed bird illustrations.
