Room 66
Lucas Cranach der Ältere
1472–1553, Germany (Kronach, Wittenberg), Northern Renaissance
Cranach was court painter to the Electors of Saxony in Wittenberg and ran one of the largest workshops of his time. He painted princes and reformers – his portrait of Martin Luther still shapes how we picture the reformer – as well as saints, figures of Venus and hunts. His woodcuts spread the images of the Reformation across Europe.
