Honoré Daumier

1808–1879, France (Marseille, Paris), Realism

Daumier drew more than 4,000 lithographs for Paris satirical papers such as “Le Charivari”. He mocked kings, ministers, lawyers and the self-satisfied bourgeoisie – and went to prison for it in 1832. He also painted washerwomen, street performers and railway travellers, with deep sympathy for ordinary people.
