Odilon Redon
1840–1916, France (Bordeaux, Paris), Symbolism
For decades Redon drew only in black: charcoal and lithographs peopled with floating eyes, sphinxes, angels and shadows – images from dreams and books. Around 1900 he suddenly turned to colour and painted glowing flowers, butterflies and mythical figures in pastel and oil. The Surrealists saw him as a forerunner.
