Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
1696–1770, Italy (Venice), Germany (Würzburg), Spain (Madrid), Rococo
Tiepolo was the celebrated ceiling painter of the eighteenth century. In Venice, in the Würzburg Residence and in the Royal Palace in Madrid he opened ceilings onto a luminous sky full of gods, allegories and floating figures. His quick pen-and-wash drawings show how easily he invented figures seen from below.
