Philosopher Seated, with Globe, Book, and Compass

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo,

There is a man seated, looking at an open book. He wears a turban-like headpiece, beard and draped robes. Nearby are an open book, a spherical object, another open book in his left hand, and a staff with a snake coiled around it. The background shows large vertical rock formations or trees to the left, against a plain sky.
