Édouard Vuillard

1868–1940, France (Paris), Nabis

Vuillard belonged to the “Nabis” (Hebrew for “prophets”), young Paris painters around 1890. He painted the flat he shared with his mother, a dressmaker: women sewing, drinking coffee, sitting by the fire – people, wallpapers and fabric patterns merge into a dense carpet of colour. He also designed theatre programmes and posters.
